for anyone who cares, here’s a somewhat prettified version of my webvisions notes. (yeah, yeah, crummy javascript. what can I say? it’s my weak point as a web developer.)
blabbing about nothing in particular
today it’s hot again and I’m still sleepy. I’m trying to get the big table in the front room cleared off, which means, among other things, that I have to go through a couple of years worth of poorly organized backup CDs. bleh. I’d rather take a nap or watch a movie.
and the desknote (otherwise known as the expensive mistake) is blistering the palms of my hands.
Friday we went to look at the laptops at the mac store around the corner from the convention center in Portland. drool….. I want a 12″ ibook. but I need to deal with the shuttle, the desknote, and the kitchen before I can even think about something like that.
sigh. this is such a mopey entry for sort of a low-energy day. muggy, too: the air has more moisture in it than the dirt in the garden does.
oh, the garden. I need to start planning for next year; this year’s been a spectacular disaster. lot of lovely flowers, to be sure. (glads are mostly done, daisies and nasturniums are starting to fade, cosmos are going strong.) but messy, hard to take care of, awkward. and the veggie garden has been about 75-90% failure. some argula, spinach & radish at the beginning, and the lettuce is going strong, but nothing else. whether the corn or carrots pull through will be the determinant of how great a disaster the veggies turn out to be.
not that I haven’t learned from the experience. (more defined and smaller flower beds, more mulch, compost, etc., better timing.) but it’s been pretty demoralizing sometimes, at least on days when I’m already in a bit of a funk.
back from portland…
would’ve hung out today but it was too damn hot; might as well be hot in my own house (oh, and let the cats outside) as while sightseeing. I’m just useless in warm weather.
webvisions was excellent, as it was last year. more (much more!) later, when I get to copying my notes…which I took on a pentium mmx checked out from the school library. no wifi for me, obviously, and no usb either, so it’ll wait until I get to work and copy my 11 page (!) word document onto a floppy…. ah, the wonders of technology.
a bit of social fun, too; I went to the wrap party and managed to be a little more social than usual. I’d even go so far as to say I had fun. 🙂
one of these days, I’m going to take a mini-vacation to Portland where I actually do some sightseeing. I like Portland (except for the roads/traffic, which is abominable) and I’d like a chance to see more of it at my own pace.
keeping my fingers crossed
there’s been a snafu with Friday night’s hotel reservation…I’m trying to work it out now, not sure what’s going to happen.
annoyed. very, very annoyed.
Update: all better now. I even added a day (at my own expense) so we wouldn’t have to get up at oh-god-early Friday morning.
this weekend
Friday I’m going to the WebVisions conference, and we’re going to hang out in PDX for a while on Saturday….
which I guess is by way of a shoutout. not that I know of any readers in Portland, but drop a comment if you’re going to be there or otherwise want to get together for coffee, etc.

minor gmail accessibility complaint
we set C’s mom & dad up with a computer recently, and I gave them one of my gmail invites. (I believe everybody should have a web-based mail account, and there’s nothing else I know as well *and* can recommend. no, not even on my own domain…long-time readers will know of the craziness I’ve gone thru with my web hosting.)
so, last Friday we went over to help out with some stuff and C taught mom his “compose in word” technique. we bumped up the default font in word to a 14 point sans serif, and she asked if we could do the same in Gmail.
which of course just meant increasing the font size in firefox (IE? what IE?)…except that strange things happened to the edge of the composing box…must be one of those frames things….
sigh. but they *are* online, and Dad is apparently have a good time futzing about with Google. (I may have to get him the Google Hacks book for his birthday.)
the erratic nature of summer
I started an entry on my whacked sleep schedule, and being tired during the workweek and all that, and then I realized I was just repeating what I said last week.
so just read that and consider that I’m in the same state. I wouldn’t’ve blogged at all, but I liked that title, and I so rarely like titles that I think of for anything, even blog entries.
hold onto your hat!
(I think) I’m finally going to try the WP Mingus upgrade…some bumpiness may be inevitable, but hopefully reduced by my earlier notes to myself.
