"Politics, as the most encompassing of our mass institutions, now balances on a knife edge between a past which no longer works and a future of chaos." Quote w/in the story. Just had to grab because the last time I heard the phrase "knife edge" was in LotR. Now THAT was serious end-of-the-world sh!t.
Also, I like the pragmatic evolutionary take, sort of the "in the long run we are all dead" POV. (replace "we are all dead" with "we all evolve.") -
these look pretty tasty. (I've been baking oatmeal-chocolate chip and pinwheel cookies this year.)

"Some evidence suggests that Christmas itself was merely a reappropriation of the pagan festival of Saturnalia. If that is in fact the case, my godless Christmas is more an insult to ancient Romans than to Christians. Since there aren't too many of them left, I won't let it worry me." The last couple of years, I've taken to telling people that I celebrate Christmas as the Japanese do (or at least as my popular understanding of that), which is to say that it's all about the aesthetics.

"The truth is that less than 3 percent of the region's total transportation funds are spent on bicycle and pedestrian projects and programs, while 37 percent of the region's population — the old, the young, the disabled, the poor and those who don't own cars — cannot or does not drive." Also noted: local roads are paid for not by gas taxes, but by sales/property tax.

“All you have to do to cook is want to do it. The kitchen is never the problem.” words to live by, I suppose. (those to whom I sent cookies for Xmas may be surprised at the kitchen I cooked them in.)

"Despite being admonished by the Federal Trade Commission in 2005 and again in 2007, FreeCreditReport.com's peddling of "free" credit reports continues — and recently it has reached a fever pitch." How slimy. Remember, boys & girls, always use AnnualCreditReport.com.

"honestly, there’s something eminently satisfying about pulverizing things with a fork. Like, “You’re no match for ME, garlic! Now, off to save some kittens from a tree! (*flies away*)”" cute. also, this looks like a good recipe, and I love garlic bread. maybe for tomorrow w/leftover spaghetti sauce?
